Our Ella Belle Now Stakes Placed

Leading Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock 1000 Guineas (1600m) hopeful, Our Ella Belle (Encosta De Lago x Kirin Belle, by McGinty), gained valuable black-type at Riccarton on Sunday when running third in the Listed Canterbury Stakes (1600m).
The mile race was packed full of 1000 and 2000 Guineas hopes, with the Pencarrow bred and raced Our Ella Belle amongst the field of sixteen.
Finding her customary position, settled back towards the tail of the field, Our Ella Belle travelled well within herself for jockey James McDonald.
Angled out in the straight, Our Ella Belle let down in the same fashion which saw her win last start at Riccarton in the Sothy’s Guineas Trial when lengthening out nicely over the final 200m.
This time however leading three-year-old colt King’s Ransom was off and gone and he eventually won the race from Comme Tu Veux (Howbaddouwantit) who enjoyed a rails run.
Our Ella Belle’s finish saw her close within a length and a half from the winner and more luck next time will see her compete strongly in the Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock 1000 Guineas on 14 November, with the mile suiting perfectly.
Our Ella Belle is the second black-type earner for her dam, Kirin Belle, with Group 2 winning Zabeel mare Winning Belle the other.
The previous race at Riccarton saw Pencarrow’s Santangelo (Lonhro x Lucky Be Lucky, by Storm Cat) return to racing in the new season with a one and a quarter length win over 1200m with James McDonald aboard.
Stakes placed herself last season when second behind Geeza in the Group 3 Windsor Park Stud Breeders Stakes (1200m), Santangelo will look to gain a black-type win this season for trainer Mark Walker.
Having won four from six starts, Santangelo has shown immense ability and she is definitely one to follow over Riccarton’s upcoming Cup Carnival.
Her dam Lucky Be Lucky, who is also the dam of four time winning Danehill mare Terroir, is a Storm Cat half-sister to Group 1 Hollywood Starlet Stakes winner, Love Lock.
