Breeders’ Cup Bonus for Pencarrow

Thoroughbred racing’s world championships, the Breeders’ Cup, took place at Santa Anita, California, over the weekend and the very first event brought about a significant update to the pedigree of Pencarrow broodmare Silver and Roses (Sadler’s Wells x Blush with Pride, by Blushing Groom).
The first event on the Breeders’ Cup programme was the Marathon event over 2800m and it was the familiar colours of Derrick Smith and Coolmore who took out the event with the superbly bred Man of Iron (Giant’s Causeway x Better Than Honour, by Deputy Minister).
The three-year-old showed tenacity in out-staying his older rivals for stable jockey Johnny Murtagh and trainer Aidan O’Brien, with last start Group 1 English St Leger victor Mastery (Sulamani) amongst the 10 horses he defeated.
Man of Iron is out of US Broodmare of the year Better Than Honour who is responsible for consecutive Group 1 Belmont Stakes victors Rags to Riches (A.P. Indy) and Jazil (Seeking the Gold), as well as Group 2 Peter Pan Stakes winner and Group 1 placed Casino Drive (Mineshaft), and now a Breeders’ Cup winner in Man of Iron.
Pencarrow’s own Silver and Roses is a half-sister to Better Than Honour, both daughters of Group 1 Kentucky Oaks winner Blush with Pride.
This also makes Silver and Roses a full sister to Maryinsky, the dam of Europe’s 2007 Champion Three Year Old filly Peeping Fawn (Danehill) and French Group 1 winner Thewayyouare (Kingmambo).
Silver and Roses was represented by her first yearling at auction at Karaka earlier this year, a filly by Pins who was purchased by Eamon Cleary from Pencarrow Stud for $300,000.
A colt from the first crop of Darci Brahma will represent Silver and Roses at Karaka 2010, while she foaled a full-brother to the yearling colt on 4 October and she visits leading Australasian sire O’Reilly this season.
