Pencarrow-breds Provide on Premier Weekend

Pencarrow-breds scored impressive victories on three metropolitan tracks over the weekend, including at Riccarton on New Zealand Bloodstock 1000 Guineas day, and at Flemington on the final day of the Victorian Spring Carnival.
OUR ELLA BELLE:
The highlight of the weekend however came from Our Ella Belle (Encosta De Lago x Kirin Belle, by McGinty) who flashed home for third in the prestigious Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock 1000 Guineas (1600m).
The Mark Walker trained filly settled behind mid-field for James McDonald who looked to angle the three-year-old out 600m from home.
In a roughly run race there was plenty of interference caused out wide and when gaps snapped shut in front of Our Ella Belle McDonald had no option but to head back towards the rail to find running room.
Our Ella Belle found some open space and made some of the same by pushing through needle-eye openings and flashed at the leading bunch of fillies which, at the wire, was headed by Katie Lee (Pins), a winner of the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas at her previous start.
Less than a length separated Our Ella Belle from the winner and her effort was extremely promising leading into the remaining seven races in the New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Series.
The remaining seven races will see three more mile contests, with the remaining race distances increasing between Saturday and the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) in March.
Our Ella Belle’s Pencarrow based dam, Kirin Belle, has already left a Group 2 winner in Winning Belle (Zabeel), and has been mated with O’Reilly’s Group 1 winning son Alamosa this season.
ENCOSTA DIABLO:
David Ellis and Mark Walker’s Te Akau Stables unleashed their smart Pencarrow-bred two-year-old colt Encosta Diablo (Encosta De Lago x Devil’s Lair, by Sir Tristram) in the Listed Berkley Stud Welcome Stakes at Riccarton also.
The $600,000 yearling had won at Riccarton on debut and returned to the familiar track to grab his first stakes race when he won the 1000m two-year-old event by a comfortable short neck over Premier Lady (Eltawasuul).
A thorough professional, the son of Encosta only did what was needed and in winning the event propped himself to the top of the $1,000,000 Karaka Million Order of Entry with $32,225 in earnings.
From Pencarrow Stud’s Devil’s Lair, Encosta Diablo is a half-brother to two Group winners including Group 1 NZ Oaks winner Vapour Trail (Jetball) and Group 2 Great Northern Guineas winner Santagostino (Giant’s Causeway), both of whom reside at Pencarrow Stud.
Encosta Diablo has a yearling half-sister by Pins who will be retained by Pencarrow Stud for racing and breeding purposes, with their dam Devil’s Lair covered by Danehill Dancer this season.
++Fellow Pencarrow-bred Fears Nothing also performed admirably at Riccarton when finishing a close second, by a nose, to stakes-winning three-year-old Joey Massino (O’Reilly) in the Ballantynes Premier (1600m).
TINTERN & LEFT STANDING:
The success of Pencarrow Stud – breds went beyond New Zealand shores on the weekend with victory by Tintern (Pins x Annie Daly, by Spinning World) in Melbourne, and Left Standing (Stravinsky x Anatomy, by Thunder Gulch) in Brisbane.
In Tintern, Pencarrow have bred a racehorse with superior ability after five victories in nine starts, his last two in succession.
Tintern won over 1700 metres at Sandown on Saturday to give Lloyd Williams' new private trainer Robert Hickmott a win with his first runner.
The $140,000 Karaka yearling cannot do anything wrong, never having finished further back than fourth, and on Saturday came from a near impossible position off the speed to get up and beat dual Listed winner and Group 1 fourth, Rhyno Chaser (Catcher in the Rye).
Tintern will get his chance to claim a Group win when he backs up into the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m) next week which could give his dam Annie Daly a stakes-winner from just her second foal.
Having now left two foals to race for two winners, Annie Daly has in the pipeline a three-year-old filly called Caldera (Tiger Hill) who has been retained to race by Pencarrow, along with her two-year-old colt by Storming Home.
From the family of Group 1 winners Art Connoisseur (winner of the 2009 Royal Ascot Golden Jubilee Stakes), Saoirse Abu (Mr Greeley), Balanchine (Storm Bird), and West Wind (Machiavellian), Annie Daly foaled down a colt by Commands this season (4 September) at Pencarrow with Group 1 winner Darci Brahma her mate for 2009.
Left Standing followed Tintern’s lead and made it back-to-back wins when winning the Bayset Handicap (1200m) in Brisbane on Saturday.
Stakes-placed last season over the same distance, Left Standing has shown an aptitude for speed having now won three of 12 races from 1000m – 1200m.
Purchased by Heinrich Bloodstock for $115,000 from 2007 Karaka Premier, Left Standing is the second foal of Pencarrow’s Group 3 Grandeur Stakes winning mare Anatomy (Thunder Gulch), herself a daughter of dual Group 1 Avondale Cup winner, Maurine (Harbor Prince).
The speedy mare has a two-year-old daughter of Redoute’s Choice who has been retained for racing by Pencarrow, while in 2009 Anatomy has crossed the ditch to visit leading international sire Danehill Dancer.
