Pezzaglia Joins High Chaparral March

Pezzaglia (High Chaparral x Paolino, by Housebuster) gave her young sire High Chaparral another impressive three-year-old winner when she defeated a maiden field of 12 three-year-old fillies yesterday at Te Rapa.

On debut, Pezzaglia travelled two and three wide for the entire 1200m journey and still proved too good when asked to make her run down the outside of the field.

Race favourite Beloved (Ustinov), who had finished a close second behind the highly promising Street Party (Handsome Ransom) at her last start, found the lead early in the straight but could not hold out Pencarrow’s Pezzgalia who made a sustained run for Sam Spratt to win by over a length.

Pezzgalia is by dual Group 1 European Derby and dual Group 1 Breeders’ Cup winner High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) who has made an incredible start to his Southern Hemisphere stud career with his oldest just spring three-year-olds.

Group 1 Cox Plate winner So You Think, Group 1 VRC Derby winner Monaco Consul, and Group 2 Wellington Guineas placed Descerado are all amongst High Chaparral’s winning three-year-olds this season, with Pezzgalia giving her sire his ninth individual winner in 2009/10.

Bred and raced by Pencarrow, Pezzgalia also added to the flurry of recent Pencarrow success in becoming the eighth winner in the past 12 days that was bred by the stud.
Out of Group 2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes winner Paolino, Pezzgalia is a half-sister to stakes-winner Mirandola (O’Reilly), and becomes the second winner from three to race for his dam.

A grand-daughter of four-time Group 1 winner Riverina Charm (Sir Tristram), Pezzgalia is expected to improve further with age with targets like the Group 1 NZ Oaks certainly a future possibility.

Paolino delivered a strong bay colt by Darci Brahma on 7 November and will be rested this year, while Mirandola has tested positive in her first season at stud to Coolmore’s Henrythenavigator.
