Darci Brahma Wins Listed Feature
19 Feb 2005Million-dollar colt Darci Brahma had racegoers gasping in awe as he produced a breath-taking finish to win the Listed $35,000 Fairview Ford Slipper (1200m) at Matamata on Saturday.
The Mark Walker-trained colt had his rivals well covered in the final stages of the two-year-old race as rider Hayden Tinsley kept him surging to the line to win in a cakewalk.
'I've known for a very long time that this horse is one out of the box,' said Walker. 'He raced a lot more profesionally today than he had in his debut win at Avondale.'
Walker is taking things one race at a time but provided he comes through Saturday's race the next event on the Danehill colt's programme will be the Gr. 1 $120,000 Ford Ellerslie Sires' Produce Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie on March 5 in which he will clash with the other top two-year-olds including Wahid and yesterday's Breeders' Stakes winner Mi Jubilee.
Following that thought will be given to taking Darci Brahma to Brisbane for a one-race campaign, possibly the Sires Produce Stakes, and wintering in the Queensland sun for a month to six weeks before returning to New Zealand for the Hawke's Bay Guineas.
Darci Brahma was purchased for $1.1 million at last year's Karaka Yearling Sales by David Ellis of Te Akau Stud from the draft of Peter and Philip Vela's Pencarrow Stud.
He is the first foal produced by Group I winning Zabeel mare Grand Echezeaux.
