Abbey Drive Heading For Derby
13 Jan 2006Punters considering a fixed-odds bet on the Mercedes Derby could be wise to get in before Abbey Drive contests the three-year-old 1600m event at Ellerslie on Saturday.
Pukekohe trainer Richard Yuill believes Abbey Drive can make a return to winning form on Saturday and stake his claims for the $600,000 Mercedes Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie on March 4.
The talented Zabeel colt is currently paying $16 on the TAB's futures market for the Derby. His stablemate, Black Panther, is currently the $10 favourite for the Group One feature.
Yuill said Abbey Drive will be ridden further back in the field in Saturday's race by jockey Grant Cooksley.
"I've got no doubts he can stay but he needs to settle back in the field. Last time he never settled and that's why he didn't finish the race out," Yuill said.
"He is stepping up over the mile for the first time so this race is going to tell us a lot," he said.
The winner of three of his seven starts to date, Abbey Drive disappointed a shade when only finishing fifth at Ellerslie on New Year's Day.
Immediately before that he had been impressive in winning over 1200m at Te Rapa on December 10.
