Pencarrow Karaka Million Prospects


The $1,000,000 Karaka Million race day provides an outstanding opportunity for the New Zealand thoroughbred industry to showcase itself to an audience of the leading bloodstock buyers and enthusiasts in the world, and Pencarrow Stud is proud to be a sponsor on the day.

The Twilight Race Meeting at Ellerslie on Sunday 25 January takes place on the eve of Karaka 2009, New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sales Series. Race one of the six-race card is scheduled to jump at 5:10pm with great Kiwi hospitality and a live band set to give international visitors an impressive welcome to New Zealand.

The $1,000,000 event has grown quickly in stature to become one of New Zealand’s most prized thoroughbred events, after all there is over $1,000,000 in prize money at stake and the event is staged in front of the global industry’s most respected participants. It is no surprise then to find buyers scouting the Karaka Sales grounds in late January in search of the next winner of New Zealand’s richest two-year-old event.

Pencarrow Stud will offer nineteen yearlings at Karaka Premier 2009, on January 26 and 27. Here are just three of the yearlings in the draft that Pencarrow Stud General Manager Leon Casey has highlighted as outstanding two-year-old types:


Lot 232 – Bay Colt – Danehill Dancer x Sierra Finch, by Diesis

An early foal (born 5 September), this colt is by top international sire Danehill Dancer, sire of 2008 Group 1 winning two-year-old’s Mastercraftsman (ex Starlight Dreams, by Black Tie Affair) and Again (ex Cumbres, by Kahyasi), as well as Group 1 2008 Breeder’s Cup Juvenile placed Westphalia (ex Parapache, by Lyphard).

His dam Sierra Finch has left four winners from five to race, including a three-quarter sister to Lot 232, Sierra Dane (Danehill) a winner of two and placed second as a two-year-old in the Group 2 Matamata Breeders’ Stakes. Sierra Finch is a half sister to Chanzi (El Gran Senor), a winner of the Listed Leopardstown Rochestown Stakes at two, and also the dam of Chant (Traditionally), New Zealand’s top two-year-old filly in 2005/06.


Lot 315 – Chestnut Colt – Choisir x Vega Sicilia, by Rodrigo De Triano

This colt is an early maturing colt (born 15 September) by a sire proven to get early two-year-old runners. Choisir (Danehill Dancer)has left smart young gallopers like Group 2 winners Dreamscape (ex Faith in Dreams, by Ferdinand), Incumbent (ex Challone, by Rubiton), and Hurried Choice (Hustle Bustle, by Catrail), as well as favoured 2009 Magic Millions 2YO Classique contender Horizons (ex Ubiquity, by Hurricane Sky).

The second foal of Group 1 placed miler Vega Sicilia, this colt hails from the family of Group 1 winning miler Star Dancer (Star Watch) and smart 2YO Listed winner Harb (Catbird).



Lot 440 – Brown Colt - Encosta De Lago x Darcybee, by Fasliyev

An early foal (born 2 September), this colt is by Encosta De Lago, Australia’s Champion Sire last season. Encosta De Lago has left Group 1 winning two-year-olds Alinghi (ex Oceanfast, by Monde Bleu) and Apercu (ex Making fey, by Zabeel). He is also the sire of outstanding two-year-olds last season in Group 2 VRC Sires Produce Stakes winner Von Costa De Hero (ex Piavonic, by Scenic) and Group 2 Turffontein South African Fillies Nursery winner Merlene De Lago (ex Merlene, by Danehill).

This colt is the first foal of Listed CJC Pegasus Stakes (1200m) winner Darcybee. A winner at two, Darcybee boasts a dam line chock full of outstanding two-year-old form. Her dam Eminent Walk (Gaius) won at two, her grand-dam Sharp Walk (Sharp Edge) won three races at two including a Listed win and a Group 1 placing in the VATC Blue Diamond Stakes, and her great grand-dam was 1970-71 Champion Australian 2YO filly Fairy Walk (Minor Portion), winner of the 1971 Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes beating Beau Rouge and My Amazon.

There are also three yearlings by Redoute's Choice, three by Pins, and one by Stravinsky, all by sires renowned for producing talented two-year-olds.
