Noble Manor Win Highlights Pencarrow Yearling

Noble Manor’s hard fought success in Singapore over the weekend highlighted the wonderful success of the Riverina Charm family developed by Pencarrow Stud.

Pencarrow Stud will offer the only yearling from this family at Karaka Premier 2009 as Lot 167.

The family development started around 25 years ago when Pencarrow Stud purchased a mare by the name of Country Charm (Northfields) in England. A winner of two races at 1800m in Great Britain, she was exported to New Zealand where she was immediately served by Champion Australasian Sire Sir Tristram. The resulting foal born in 1985 was a bay filly, later raced by Pencarrow Stud as Riverina Charm.

Trained by Brian Mayfield-Smith in Australia, Riverina Charm possessed supreme ability winning seven races, including four Group 1 races, beating the likes of Castletown, Better Loosen Up, Research and Boardwalk Angel. According to Mayfield-Smith, her effort and ability to win the Group 1 VATC One Thousand Guineas, Group 1 STC Canterbury Guineas, and the Group 1 STC Rosehill Guineas in her three year old year will never be accomplished again; it is just too hard these days.

Riverina Charm herself left five foals to race for four winners including Group winners Sarwatch (Jetball), the dam of Noble Manor (Stravinsky), and Paolino (Housebuster), who is represented by a Savabeel colt at Karaka 2009.

Group 1 MVRC Cox Plate winner Savabeel (Zabeel) stands at Waikato Stud and, like Paolino, he is out of a Group 1 winning dam in Savannah Success (Success Express), winner of the Group 1 NZ Oaks and Group 1 STC Ansett Australia Stakes. His oldest crop are two-year-olds and with numerous trial winners already the signs point to future success at stud.

Paolino won five races including the Group 2 Counties RC Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes. She has produced two foals to race including Mirandola (O’Reilly), the third-top rated 2YO filly in New Zealand in 2006-07 with victory in the Listed Avondale JC 2YO Filles’ Stakes.

Leon Casey of Pencarrow Stud is very happy with the Premier Colt. “He is a really good colt, neat and tidy, with good bone. He has a lovely relaxed attitude which makes him a real favourite of our staff here”.

The Pencarrow Stud yearling draft will arrive at Karaka on Tuesday, 20 January, with the draft being available for viewing at Karaka from Wednesday, 21 January, onwards.
