Dominic Li Has Pencarrow Success

IDL Racing’s Dominic Li was rewarded for his faith in Pencarrow Stud-bred yearlings when Coppa Del Mondo cruised to victory in the Ragdoll Drifters 1200 (1200m) last week at Avondale.
A rich bay, Coppa Del Mondo (Van Nistelrooy – Oenotria, by O’Reilly) is an impressive looking three-year-old gelding, quality which saw him bring $110,000 at Karaka 2007 Premier Yearling Sale to the bid of Li.
His good looks seem to have transferred to Coppa Del Mondo’s obvious good ability, using energy early to position himself handy from a wide barrier in the hands of James McDonald, before gathering in the leader and holding on for victory.
Trainer Stephen Marsh comments post race put into context how impressive the Pencarrow bred’s effort was.
“It was his first start for me. He has not raced in thirteen months, and not trialled in eight months, but he was just working so well at home I decided to run him fresh on race day.”
“He will improve a great deal from the race and I expect him to really come into his own when he gets over a mile.”
Owner Dominic Li has purchased four horses from the Pencarrow Stud draft at Karaka since 2006, including a lovely filly by Stravinsky – Oh So Precious (Sadler’s Wells) for $260,000 at Karaka 2009.
The most promising thus far, Coppa Del Mondo, is from a very ‘current’ family which includes Group 1 NZ 1000 Guineas winners Dorabella (Postponed) and Insouciant (Keeper), the reigning New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year.
He is out of O’Reilly mare Oenotria; herself a grand-daughter of one of Pencarrow Stud’s founding broodmares Our Lafite (Sovereign Edition), winner of the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes, and placed second in the Group 1 VRC Oaks.
Oenotria was sold privately in 2007, and is currently being bred from by Brown Thoroughbreds and JML Bloodstock. A half-brother to Coppa Del Mondo, by Savabeel, was sold to Bart Cummings at Karaka 2009 Premier Sale from the draft of Little Avondale Stud.
The next start for Coppa Del Mondo is still being finalised, but Stephen Marsh has his eye on a Special Conditions 1400m race at Ellerslie on 7 March, the final day of Auckland Cup Week.
