Grand-Daughter of Trotanoy Crossing Tasman for G.1

Bacchanal Woman (Encosta De Lago – M’Lady Fonteyn, by Zabeel), a grand-daughter of Pencarrow Stud’s Listed Canterbury Belle Stakes winner Trotanoy (Lord Seymour), is heading to New Zealand to compete in the Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock Breeder’s Stakes on April 4.

The Neil Dryden-trained galloper won the Listed National Sprint (1400m) at her home track of Canberra on the racing club’s biggest day, last Sunday 8 March. It was Bacchanal Woman’s seventh victory from twenty career starts, and her first at black type level.

The grey, who takes after her grand-dam in colouring, will head to New Zealand on Tuesday 17 March before starting in the Group 2 Japan/NZ International Trophy on 21 March, as a lead up to the Te Aroha feature a fortnight later.

She will be guided by her regular race-day rider Kevin Sweeney, who won last season's Canberra RC Jockeys' Premiership.

Bacchanal Woman, the winner of A$187,740, is unique in that she is out of a Sydney juvenile winner by Zabeel in M’Lady Fonteyn. Pencarrow Stud has a particular interest in the family through Trotanoy’s own daughter Marie Claire (O’Reilly), who was a Listed winner and Group 1 placed second in the Captain Cook Stakes at Trentham.

Marie Claire’s first foal Miranda Miss (Reset) won at her very first start this season for Mark Walker and looks a fine prospect for races run at the distance of a mile and over. She also has a two-year-old Johar filly that has been retained by the stud, who, together with Miranda Miss, will benefit residually with strong performances by Bacchanal Woman in New Zealand.

Marie Claire foaled a bay colt by Darci Brahma this season and is due to foal to Pentire on 13 September this year.

Pencarrow Stud’s only other member of the family is Libourne (Montjeu – Trotanoy) who foaled a Fast N Famous colt this season and is back in foal to the top Australian sprinter.
