Santangelo Strikes Again

Pencarrow Stud-bred and owned Santangelo (Lonhro – Lucky Be Lucky, by Strom Cat) recorded her second win on the trot, taking out the Hills Haden Valuers ‘1300’ for three-year-olds at Tauranga on Saturday.

Having just her fourth raceday start, the three-year-old proved the consummate professional, bouncing out nicely from the gate and going forward to sit just outside pacemaker Fyfetheknife in the running. When asked for her run by rider Michael Walker on entering the straight she knuckled down to work and won by a half length. Second was Fyfetheknife (Spartacus) with Scarlet Vanhara (Van Nistelrooy) third.

Trained by Mark Walker, Santangelo’s record now reads four starts for three wins and $38,430 in prizemoney. The near black filly is being aimed at the Group 3 Windsor Park Stud Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) at Te Rapa on April 25, and currently holds a nomination for the Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock Breeders’ Stakes (1600m)at Te Aroha on April 4.

She is from the first crop to race of her 11-time Group 1 winning sire Lonhro, who stands at Darley Australia. This season in New Zealand the son of Octagonal has had six starters for six winners with Santangelo the best performed of these to date.

Lucky Be Lucky is a half-sister to the Group 1 Hollywood Starlet Stakes winner Love Lock (Silver Ghost) and was the second to foal at Pencarrow this season, producing an early filly by Darci Brahma.
