Speedy Star (Falbrav – Macchiato, by Night Shift) won his second consecutive 1650m race, the Tsui Ping Handicap, in Hong Kong on Wednesday when the three-year-old demolished his rivals in Falbrav-like fashion.

The son of eight-time Group 1 winner and British and Italian Horse of the Year Falbrav (Fairy King) was selected for the Hong Kong Jockey Club by New Zealand Bloodstock’s International Bloodstock Manager John Cameron as a yearling after Speedy Star had impressed him as a type.

“He was an attractive powerfully built colt who walked with great purpose and had a good head and eye.”

“He was built in the mould of Falbrav, he reminded me very much of his internationally proven Group 1 winning sire, and being from the family of successful Pencarrow-breds Star Dancer and Filante Etoile, he was certainly an attractive racehorse prospect .”

Speedy Star was eventually purchased by the HKJC for $300,000 at the 2007 Karaka Premier Sale, later fetching more than two and a half times that, HK$4,700,000, at the HKJC’s 2007 International Sale where he was purchased by current owner Kwok Chan Yiu.
The Peter Ho trained galloper has now won twice from eight starts, two in a row since stepping up in distance to a mile, a distance at the lowest end of his own sire Falbrav’s winning range, with his thirteen wins eventuating at 1600m – 2400m.

Falbrav’s last start, and last victory, came in the Group 1 Hong Kong Cup (2000m) where he defeated the likes of Rakti and Elegant Fashion. Speedy Star has shown very good ability and will continue to make his presence felt as he makes his way through the Hong Kong grades with further improvement expected next year as a four-year-old, and as he races over more ground.

His dam Macchiato foaled a colt by Champion sire Zabeel at Pencarrow Stud this season on 6 October 2008.
