Battocchi Two-Year-Old Wins with Ease

Pencarrow raced and bred horses made a huge impression at trials staged at Rotorua yesterday by winning four trials with an impressive three length trial victory by Battocchi’s two-year-old filly by Johar.

Below is a report on the trials action from New Zealand’s champion trainer Mark Walker.

2YO FILLY - JOHAR X BATTOCCHI (SUCCESS EXPRESS)

She trialled over 800m with Michael Walker riding her. She was really settled in the birdcage and did a nice quiet prelim. She was calm behind the gates, jumped well and sat midfield. Michael brought her out wide at the top of the straight for better ground and just clicked her up and she won most impressively by 3 lengths, easing up at the line. She was the most impressive trialist of the day. We will just see how she pulls up before deciding whether to give her one run at 2 or whether to put her out until next season. She is quite an exciting filly.

2YO FILLY - TIGER HILL X DANCE MY DANCE (SADLER’S WELLS)

She trialled over 1000m ridden by Michael Walker. She drew barrier 7 out of 8 jumped well but settled last. Michael eased her to the outside across the top and she really came with a flying burst to win her trial easily by three quarters of a length. Michael was most impressed with her. We will just see how she pulls up before making a decision as to whether to trial her again or perhaps give her a little trip away.

2YO FILLY - CAPE CROSS X SHOPPING SPREE (SADLER’S WELLS)

She trialled over 800m with Michael riding her. She drew barrier 1 out of 6. She was nice and settled in the birdcage and did a nice prelim. She jumped well and settled back. She was struggling in the ground until Michael got her out wide and then she really ran home very nicely catching the eye of the commentator, to finish a close up fifth. It was a nice trial for a staying type of filly over 800m.

2YO FILLY - NO EXCUSE NEEDED X TWAFEAJ (TOPSIDER)

She trialled over 800m with Michael aboard. She drew barrier 6 out of 6. She jumped well and settled back. She was lost for early speed, but she flew down the outside to win her trial by a head. It was a very nice trial considering it was her first trial and she is still a bit green. We will see how she pulls up before deciding what to do with her next.

4YO MARE - MISS SIVIVATU (Danehill Dancer x Ahdaab, by Rahy)

She trialled today over 800m in a field of 4 ridden by Michael. She got a little bit worked up before her trial but did a nice prelim and loaded away well. She jumped well, settled back then got into the better ground out wide and finished on very strongly to win her trial by a neck. It was a good trial and Michael reported that she got through the ground pretty well, which was quite chopped up by the time of her trial. We will look for a suitable race in around 3 weeks time for her.

Miss Sivivatu was sourced by Pencarrow Stud in Ireland where she was placed twice from three starts as a three year old. She is a sister to 2008 Canadian Champion Turf Mare Callwood Dancer, while her dam is a half sister to Maroof and Sabaah, the dam of Desert King.

Pencarrow runners this weekend include 2YO Gordon Roberts (Encosta De Lago x Gordons, by Kaapstad) who placed on debut and should be hard to roll in Race 2 Classic Hits 95 BOP FM 2YO (1200m) at Tauranga. Heyerdahl (Pins x Tamarino, by Caerleon), who scored a destructive five and a half length victory at her last start, is Pencarrow’s only other runner and she faces nine other progressive 3YOs in Race 3 Mount Wrecking Company 3YO (1600m) at Tauranga.
