Lord Pyrus Makes It Two from Four

Pencarrow-bred galloper Lord Pyrus (Pyrus x Eminent Walk, by Gaius) took his winning strike rate to 50% when he won at Cranbourne over 1400m on Sunday.

The black three-year-old colt, who races in the same colours as Group 1 Caulfield Cup winner Master O’Reilly, is owned by Bill and Denise Sutcliffe and trained by Judy Mawer who handled the early racing career of Master O’Reilly before being given 10% ownership of the horse, courtesy of the Sutcliffes, when he was transferred to Danny O’Brien in Melbourne.

Lord Pyrus was purchased for the Sutcliffes by their son Liam at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2007 Ready to Run Sale for $45,000. Pencarrow Stud sold the son of Pyrus for $6,000 at the 2006 Karaka Weanling Sale to Jessica Prangley who educated him for the two-year-old breeze-up sale.

Having now run in four races, winning twice and placing twice, Lord Pyrus has shown himself to be extremely consistent, and better than that, a colt with talent.

His wins have come at 1300m and 1400m and he has now accrued A$23,101 in earnings. He is the sixth winner from seven runners for his two-year-old winning dam Eminent Walk who has left two stakes winners to date including Listed CJC Warstep Stakes winner Tehama (Centaine) and Listed CJC Pegasus Stakes winner Darcybee (Fasliyev).

To understand further the outstanding achievement of Eminent Walk at stud, consider the fact that each of her winners have been by different stallions.

Now aged 17, Eminent Walk still resides at Pencarrow Stud with her stakes winning daughters who are due to foal to Flying Spur (Darcybee) and Choisir (Tehama) in August.

Eminent Walk’s latest edition is a weanling colt by Waikato Stud’s Fast n Famous born 13 September 2008 (pictured).
