Insouciant and Mirandola Cross the Ditch

Pencarrow Stud’s recent racetrack retirees Insouciant and Mirandola have crossed the Tasman Sea to begin their stud careers in Australia.
Both mares are successful graduates of Pencarrow Stud’s racing policy of retaining their homebred fillies for the racetrack.
Insouciant (Keeper x Loudenne, by Palace Music) provided the ultimate thrill for the stud by taking out the 2007 Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock 1000 Guineas on the way to being crowned 2007/08 New Zealand Filly of the Year.
Being a grand-daughter of Group 1 VRC Oaks placed Our Lafite (Sovereign Edition), Insouciant’s family is both current and performing at the highest level having produced Group 1 NZ 1000 Guineas winner Dorabella and stakes winners Crusoe and Gin Dartre in the past few seasons.
Insouciant will visit leading Australian sire More Than Ready (Southern Halo) at Vinery Stud in 2009. More Than Ready has sired the past two winners of the Group 1 Golden Slipper in Phelan Ready and Sebring, and has proved a valuable outcross for Danehill-line mares like Insouciant. Of More Than Ready’s five Group 1 winners, two are from Danehill mares (Perfectly Ready and Benicio), and another from a Flying Spur (Danehill) mare (Sebring).
Compare also his stake winners to runners percentage of 11% for mares by Danehill or a Danehill son, a figure which is reduced to 8% over the whole broodmare population he has covered.
Mirandola (O’Reilly x Paolino, by Housebuster) who raced ten times for two victories, including the Listed Avondale JC 2YO Fillies Stakes, will also begin her stud career by visiting an Australian-based stallion while she is in her current state of ‘safely mobile’ as a maiden mare.
Though her mate has not been confirmed, the young mare by exciting broodmare sire prospect O’Reilly has plenty of options. She is a third generation stakes winner being from Group 2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes winner Paolino, while her grand-dam is quadruple Group 1 winner Riverina Charm (Sir Tristram).
All the current top ten Australasian sires are suitable, as are many exciting young sire prospects situated in the Hunter Valley.
