Amaryllis Returns

Pencarrow bred and raced Amaryllis (Red Ransom x Lafleur, by Zabeel) returned to the racetrack yesterday at the Te Teko trials and signalled her intentions for the season ahead, winning comfortably by a neck in the fastest 1000m Open Catchweight of the day.

A winner of two of five starts in her debut season, Amaryllis beat home fellow speedy four-year-old mares Solo Flight (Stravinsky) and Kitt Ann Miss (Rock of Gibraltar) when coming from second last on the home turn to score in 1.01.59.

Stakes-performers Bella Renza (Van Nistelrooy), winner of the Listed Westbury Classic (1400m), and Shi Kin Fly (Shinko King), placed in the NZ St Leger (2500m), both trailed in the wake of Amaryllis who will search for black-type herself this season.

Good enough to run fifth, four lengths behind Juice, Daffodil, and Il Quello Veloce, at just her second start in the Group 3 Gold Trail Stakes, Amaryllis will aim to have her first start this preparation at Te Aroha on September 23.

Her dam Lafleur, winner of the Group 2 Royal Stakes and Group 2 Sir Tristram Fillies Classic, foaled down her fourth foal just this Monday (17 September) when birthing a 62kg filly by Champion Redoute’s Choice. Lafleur visits Centaine Award winner O’Reilly this season.

Pencarrow racing had a further two winners at the Te Teko trials including an Encosta De Lago half-sister to Lafleur. Running over 800m the unnamed four-year-old mare did things easily finally victorious by three-quarters of a length.

The Stud’s imported mare Miss Sivivatu (Danehill Dancer x Ahdaab, by Rahy), who placed in four of seven starts late last season, returned after a brief break to beat five rivals in the very last heat of the day over 1200m.

She will next race at Hawera on 3 September providing she gets the good ground she requires to show her best.

Three mares, Danehill Princess, Lafleur, and Kwan, have foaled at Pencarrow thus far in the new season. Stay tuned to all the latest foalings by visiting the FOALS section of this website regularly.
