Our Ella Belle Guineas Bound

Pencarrow bred and raced three-year-old filly Our Ella Belle (Encosta De Lago x Kirin Belle, by McGinty) scored an eye catching maiden victory in the Sothys Guineas Trail (1400m) at Riccarton on Saturday.

Lining up against nine opposition, fillies and colts, who share Guineas aspirations, Our Ella Belle was having just her second start after finishing strongly for eighth on debut where she was severely hampered 700m from home.

Apprentice Jason Collett rode the Pencarrow filly kindly, allowing her to find her feet at the tail of the field before gently moving her out centre track to finish strongly in the straight.

The big roomy Riccarton track suited and Our Ella Belle showed true class by reeling in the previously undefeated colt Descarado (High Chaparral) who started a strong favourite.

Her time was 1.22.48 and her winning margin three-quarters of a length which at closer look could have been further given the fact that Collett had lost his whip 300m from home and just coaxed the Encosta filly with his hands and heels.

Our Ella Belle is nominated for both the $1,000,000 Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas (7 November) and Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock 1000 Guineas (14 November) and her victory would suggest that she would not be out of place in either.

From the wonderful Belle family, Our Ella Belle is a half-sister to Group 2 Queensland Guineas winner Winning Belle (Zabeel) and stakes placed Lady Maroof (Maroof), herself the dam of last season’s Group 3 Kenilwoth Winter Derby second placed Fabiani (Model Man).

Pencarrow Stud will offer a half-brother to Our Elle Belle at the 2009 Karaka Premier Sale. By Darci Brahma (Danehill) the bay colt was born 29 October last year and fingers-crossed he might have a significant pedigree update by February 2010.
