Pencarrow Racing to the Fore at Taupo

Six of Pencarrow’s racing team headed to Taupo in search of a good track to really settle in to the new season and success flowed with two winners and two place-getters at the Wednesday meet.
Breaking her maiden at Taupo at her last start, Miss Sivivatu (Danehill Dancer – Ahdaab, by Rahy) relished the circuit once again in beating her rating 70 opposition by three and three-quarter lengths over 1800m, after being eased down to the line by Michael Walker.
Having now won her last two starts by a combined margin of seven lengths, Miss Sivivatu’s form indicates that she has finally settled into New Zealand conditions after being imported from Ireland.
Trainer Mark Walker has pencilled in a start in Group 3 (2500m) company at Riccarton’s NZ Cup Carnival on 7 November, with the aim of starting in a 2000m race in between now and then.
Gordon Roberts (Encosta De Lago x Gordon’s by Kaapstad) stepped out in the very next race, a maiden three-year-old affair over 1200m.
The well-bred colt ran gamely beaten just half a head by 40-1 shot Marsh Harbour (Volksraad) in a tight four way go for first prize-money.
Given his pedigree Gordon Roberts is expected to excel over further ground and his first-up effort this season was encouraging considering he has not raced since May.
Two races later Pencarrow was represented by two runners in the Beamish Bloodstock 1200m maiden, race favourite Star Jasmine (Encosta De Lago x Desert Lily, by Green Desert) and Martial Art (Tiger Hill x Kwan, by Sadler’s Wells).
Star Jasmine did as punters expected with a resounding three-quarter of a length victory in the hands of Michael Walker after settling off the pace and sprinting strongly.
Stable mate Martial Art looked New Zealand Derby all over when he flashed home over the sprint distance to finish just a length off the winner after being stone last on the home bend.
He, like Gordon Roberts, is entered for the $200,000 Karaka 3YO Mile set to take place on 31 January at Ellerslie, and both colts look suited to competing in the inaugural event en route to the NZ Derby held at the same course in March.
Keepers Tally (Zabeel x Paint Me a Dream, by Deputy Minister) will be the next runner with Pencarrow ownership to race when he starts over 2000m at Matamata on Saturday. He, like Gordon Roberts and Martial Art, are owned in partnership with Mark Wyborn and Trevor Farmer.
