Santagostino Wins Great Northern Guineas
26 Dec 2006Mark Walker-trained filly Santagostino turned the tables on favourite Mettre En Jeu in the Group 2 $150,000 First Sovereign Trust Great Northern Guineas (2100m) at Ellerslie on Tuesday.

The result reversed the outcome of their last clash at Ellerlsie on December 17.

Walker also saddled up third placed runner Uberalles who charged home late after not enjoying much luck in the running.

Both Santagostino and Uberalles are owned by their Hamilton breeders, Peter and Philip Vela, of Pencarrow Stud.

'There is not a lot between these two fillies and they are both very classy,' Walker said.

Santagostino, by Giant's Causeway, is a half-sister to Group 1 New Zealand Oaks winner Vapour Trail.

A half-brother to Santagostino, by Johannesburg, was sold for $410,000 at the Karaka yearling sales last January.

Santagostino was ridden by Leith Innes who timed his winning run to perfection.
