First Black Type for Saperavi

Beautifully bred colt Saperavi has recorded his first black type with a placing in the Listed Ray Coupland Stakes (1400m) at Ashburton on Friday.

After being checked slightly in the early stages of the race the three-year-old colt relaxed nicely to the turn but he raced greenly down the centre of the straight for third place.

"Michael (Walker) said after the ride that a firmer track next time out should suit the colt a lot better and I think once we get him up to 1600m we will start to see the best of him," commented trainer Mark Walker.

Walker now has Saperavi headed for the Listed Canterbury Stakes (1600m) for three-year-olds on 21 October.

By Stravinsky from Pencarrow Stud's SAJC Australasian Oaks winning mare Grand Echezeaux, Saperavi was a sale-topper at the Karaka Premier Sale in 2006 at $2.2 million. A half-brother to champion performer Darci Brahma (by Danehill) he has had just three raceday outings, recording a maiden win over 1200m at his last start.
