Insouciant Wins 1000 Guineas
10 Nov 2007Peter and Philip Vela owned-and-bred filly Insouciant (Keeper x Loudenne) triumphed in the Group 1 $325,000 New Zealand Bloodstock One Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton on Saturday.

"Having the V brand on a horse always gives you plenty of confidence," said successful Matamata trainer Mark Walker.

"She has improved with every race she's had and a change of gear today worked the oracle," Walker said.

Winning rider Michael Walker said the important victory left him with a "lump in my throat".

Insouciant made a good beginning and Michael Walker soon talk her into the lead.

The filly opened up a winning break in the home straight and fought off the strong challenge of Lovetrista. However, Lovetrista was put back to third place following a protest with Keepa Cruisin, also by Keeper, promoted from third to second.

Insouciant displayed her abundance of ability on debut when blitzing a more than capable field at Taupo by 5.75 lengths on September 14 - breaking the track record into the bargain. She then finished a creditable fourth after racing greenly and getting into trouble in the Group 3 Highview Stakes at just her second start at Hawkes Bay in late September.

Following that, Insouciant trekked to Taranaki for start number three and again displayed her ample prowess with a strong finish to win by four lengths on 13 October. Her fourth start was in the Kolfinna Memorial 3YO Fillies' Handicap at Trentham at the end of October where she was just nosed out into second by Anna Bek.

Insouciant's dam, the Palace Music mare Loudenne, is also the dam of Group 3 winner Copper Mountain (by Jetball), and has a yearling colt by Johar that the Stud will offer at the Karaka Sales in January.
