Pencarrow Stud has signalled the start of a very promising spring for its thoroughbred product with an impressive three winners on the same day.

Heading the line-up was a barnstorming finish by four-year-old filly Our Ella Belle (Encosta de Lago x Kirin Belle) in the final race of Group 1 day at Hawke’s Bay on Saturday. One of only two winners on the day to come from behind (the other reigning Champion 3YO Katie Lee) the lightly raced filly put in a huge performance to down the field in the $25,000 1400m event in the hands of James Macdonald).

Our Ella Belle had a promising season as a three-year-old with just three raceday outings before a courageous third placing behind Katie Lee and Keep the Peace in the New Zealand Bloodstock One Thousand Guineas (1600m).

Following Mark Walker’s departure to Singapore, she is now in the care of new training partnership, Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie, based at Pencarrow Racing’s private training complex at Maungatautari.

In the Winner’s Circle in Christchurch earlier in the day was fellow Pencarrow-bred Encosta de Lago, Encosta Diablo, who kept his near-perfect record intact with his fourth win from five career starts.

Trained by Jason Bridgman the three-year-old was purchased by Te Akau’s David Ellis at the 2009 Karaka Premier Sale for $600,000, and forms part of the Te Akau Four Colts Syndicate of which Vela girls, Petrea and Victoria, are part of.

From Pencarrow mare Devil’s Lair, Encosta Diablo is a half-brother to G1 NZ Oaks winner Vapour Trail (Jetball) and G2 winner Santagostino (Giant’s Causeway).

Another winning sale graduate for Pencarrow was the two-year-old Pins colt from Velvet and Satin scoring on debut in the $10,000 800m event at Riccarton.

A $460,000 Karaka yearling bought by David Ellis, the colt – now named Bespoke - is also now trained by Jason Bridgman.

A winner of both his trials for his owners, the 2010 Te Akau Breeding Syndicate, Bespoke holds entry eligibility for New Zealand Bloodstock’s one million dollar Karaka Million for two-year-olds on 30 January 2011, and the $6250 winnings put him a big step closer to making the final field. His next start is likely to be the $45,000 Welcome Stakes on NZ Cup day on 13 November.

Other good performances at the weekend came from Red Ransom mare, Amaryllis (ex Lafleur), and promising youngster, Belle Chantecler.

Redoute's Choice filly Belle Chantecler (ex Grace and Power) added a second placing to her three raceday outings in the A$30,000 1200m event at Moonee Valley for trainer Lee Freedman. Placed third on debut, and a winner last time out three weeks' ago, the three-year-old filly is showing promise for her owners Mark & Shari Read. She was purchased from the Karaka Premier Sale for $500,000 in 2009.

Rounding off a promising weekend for Pencarrow Stud was five-year-old mare Amaryllis - a winner of six from 19 career starts - who put in a very encouraging performance for her first outing of the new season to run a creditable fourth placing behind Group 1 winner Altered Image.
