Amaryllis No Prima Donna

Amaryllis resumed from a two month break away from the races to win the Rating 70 Lodge City Rentals 1200 (1200m) against older horses at Te Rapa on Saturday.

The three-year-old Pencarrow Stud bred filly took on older horses for the first time in this her third start and she stepped up to the challenge with ease, carrying top weight and sweeping past her rivals to score victory in the hands of Jason Collett. The winning margin was one and a half lengths, impressive given the 1200m and backed up by a solid time of 1.10.52.

Amaryllis (Red Ransom – Lafleur, by Zabeel), named after a type of lily, is out of Pencarrow Stud bred and raced Lafleur (ex Desert Lily, by Green Desert), winner of the Group 2 ARC Royal Stakes and Group 2 Sir Tristram Fillies Classic.

Lafleur was trained by Jim Gibbs at Matamata and was well known for being cantankerous at times during her racing career. Her first foal Amaryllis shares none of her mother’s attitude however with Pencarrow Stud’s Leon Casey confirming she has a wonderful temperament.

Trainer Mark Walker will now aim Amaryllis at the New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Series with the next race in that Series being the Group 3 Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham on January 24. Before then the filly is likely to line up at Te Rapa on January 15 in a Rating 80 over 1400m.
Long term the filly will be out to chase black type to join the likes of family members Octagonal, Habibti, and Danewin in bold print on her pedigree page.

Pencarrow sold Lafleur’s second foal at 2008 Karaka Premier Yearling Sale. The Johar colt fetched $240,000 to the bid of Hajime Kaneko for Japan. Lafleur has a yearling filly by Redoute's Choice which will be retained by Pencarrow Stud, and Lafleur has been confirmed in-foal to the champion sire again this season.

Zygadene, Lafleur’s full sister, is in foal to Red Ransom (Roberto) this season, the resulting foal being a full sister in blood to Amaryllis. Their dam Desert Lily (Green Desert) has been confirmed in foal to successful sire More Than Ready (Southern Halo).
