Four-year-old Pencarrow bred Martial Art (Tiger Hill x Kwan) broke through for his first win on Singapore soil in last night’s S$75,000 Goodwill Stakes (1800m) at Kranji racecourse.

Tailing the field for much of the trip, jockey Saimee Jumat made his move as the pack turned for home with Martial Art coming right around the outside of the field on the turn. Levelling the leader at the 300m mark, Martial Art pulled away in emphatic fashion to win on the line by half a length to the favourite, Fatkid (NZ) (Handsome Ransom), with another five lengths to third place.

Trained by Laurie Laxon Martial Art is raced by his Silver Fern Racing Stable.

By German Group 1 winner Tiger Hill (Danehill) from the Pencarrow broodmare Kwan (Sadler’s Wells) Martial Art was purchased by David Ellis as a yearling at Karaka for $250,000. Now a winner of three of his 13 lifetime starts, he has been hunting for a win since his arrival into Singapore earlier this year but before Sunday his four Singapore starts had resulted in two seconds, a third and a fourth.

Pencarrow has three siblings of Martial Art at the stud, Indomitable (Danehill), Veyrier (Van Nistelrooy) and an unnamed yearling filly by Reset. Kwan herself was sold at the National Weanling & Broodmare Sale at Karaka for $60,000.

The feature race on the card in Singapore last night was the Group 1 S$1,350,000 Singapore Gold Cup where fellow Pencarrow bred Big Maverick ran a bold race to finish in third place.
