Five Winners in Four Days for Pencarrow

With just two weeks until the National Yearling Sales Series, Pencarrow Stud is doing its best to boast the merits of its product with an impressive five winners and two seconds in just four days.

The latest winner came on Sunday at Waipukurau with the lightly-raced Pencarrow-bred mare Kudamm (Cape Cross x Shopping Spree, Sadler’s Wells) for trainers Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie.

Lining up in her tenth career outing and guided by jockey Chris Johnson, Kudamm chased down the race leaders from the back of the field to seal her third win in a photo finish in the Bushetts Transport Ltd 1600m at Waipukurau.

On Saturday at Ellerslie, Steven and Julia got early points on the board with a win by Pencarrow-bred Amaryllis (Red Ransom x Lafleur, Zabeel) in Race 1, the $20,000 Blandford Stud Yearling Draft 1100m. Beaten by less than half a length two starts ago in the Group 2 Concorde Handicap, Amaryllis was primed for her seventh career win, ably aided this time out by leading rider James McDonald.

Later in the card, New Zealand’s Champion 2YO last season proved that she’s back to winning form by taking out the $10,800 Cambridge Stud Yearling Draft 1600m.

Trained by John Sargent with James McDonald aboard, Banchee put in a game performance at her last start to run second by a nose in the Group 2 Cambridge Stud Eight Carat Classic (1600m) signaling her return to form that saw her win the Group 1 ARC Diamond Stakes (1200m) last season. Saturday’s outing showed she can go one better, securing her first win of her three-year-old season.

The previous day, a trip to Paeroa for maiden filly Dolmabache (Redoute’s Choice x Our Echezeaux, Zabeel) proved fruitful, downing the field in the 1670m event by half a length for Pencarrow’s regular training partnership of Steven and Julia.

With just four career starts to her credit, the three-year-old Pencarrow-bred filly now has her sights set on the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks on 19 March.

The day before that Our Ella Belle (Encosta de Lago x Kirin Belle, McGinty) kicked off Pencarrow’s winning streak, breaking a run of mixed fortune with an easy win in the Vero Insurance rating 80 (1400m). She now heads to the Group 1 Thorndon Mile.

Added to Pencarrow’s five winners in the past four days were second placings by Ebullient (Stravinsky x Ethereal) and Miraflores (Johar x Marie Claire), bringing Pencarrow Racing’s tally to 16 seconds for the season to date.

The previous weekend at Kumara’s renowned Gold Nuggets meeting on the South Island’s West Coast, the Pencarrow Racing team combined to produce another winner in Miranda Miss (Reset x Marie Claire, by O’Reilly) and a second placing by Alentejo (Spartacus x Virtus, by Tale of the Cat), making six winners and three seconds in the past nine days for Pencarrow.
