Those watching the Harveys Real Estate Tokoroa 1400 yesterday would be quick to agree that Guiseppina is a horse that is going places after she demolished a good field by five lengths at Matamata.

Trained by Steven Ramsay & Julia Ritchie, Guiseppina (Johar x Battocchi) was ridden confidently by jockey James McDonald with the four-year-old racing at the back of the field in transit before being brought wide on the turn.

Travelling beautifully into the straight, the daughter of Johar effortlessly kicked away from the field, with McDonald easing her down at the line to win by five lengths.

Understandably, co-trainer Steven ‘Rambo’ Ramsay was very impressed with the win.

“I think she won even better than her win last start when she was coming off a spell, and she has more improvement in her.

“She has always shown plenty of ability and Michael Walker rated her very highly when he was riding her earlier in her career.

“Last prep she won in only her second race day appearance beating Keep the Peace and The Party Stand in the process who are both Group 1 winners so the form is starting to stack up.

“She ran a great time yesterday and James didn’t have to ask at all for her to produce that effort, so we are hoping to target the Group 1 Te Aroha Breeders Stakes at her next start. It will be a big step up but she will definitely make her presence known if she makes the field.”

The result was also the 500th win for talented young jockey James McDonald who is riding in sublime form. He heads across the Tasman this weekend for the feature Australian meeting at Rosehill.

The four-year-old mare who won by almost four lengths at her previous start has now put together back-to-back wins. The win takes her winning tally to three from only five outings.

Guiseppina is from the Success Express mare Battocchi who won the Listed Matriarch Stakes and Ballarat Cup on the track, and is the dam of five foals to race for five winners.

These include Guiseppina’s half-brother by Faltaat, Bibulous, a three-time winner for trainer Bruce Wallace, while her yearling half-brother by Darci Brahma was bought by Dean Wiles at Karaka 2011 for $40,000. Battocchi has returned to Darci Brahma this season.

Guiseppina’s grand-dam is the Imposing mare Avant and is a half-sister to the Group 1 WA Oaks winner Trappings (Grosvenor) and is the dam of Awave, the grand-dam of the Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas winner The Pooka (Tobougg).
