The Pencarrow Stud bred, raised and sold Darci Brahma took a big step in his new career as a stallion on Saturday, with his son Darci Be Good becoming the first stakes winner for his young sire.

Darci Brahma has had three individual winners on the track and his son Super Easy came within a nose of winning the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes earlier in the season. But that all changed at Randwick on Saturday, with Darci Be Good (Darci Brahma x You Can’t Say That) taking out the Listed Bacardi Breezer Fernhill Handicap (1600m).

The Listed Fernhill Handicap is a time-honoured race at the AJC Autumn Carnival and has been won by such great horses as Beau Zam, Handy Proverb, Dracula, Danewin, March Hare, Kinjite, Centro etc, all subsequent winners at Group 1 level.

Trained by Bede Murray, Darci Be Good ran well in transit and was travelling beautifully from the 600 metre mark under jockey Luke Nolen. In the straight he raced well, holding off the fast finishing Cocky Raider to win comfortably at the post.

Murray was quick to dismiss any plans of backing up Darci Be Good in Saturday’s Group 1 Champagne Stakes also over a mile, with the colt going to the paddock to prepare for the prestigious Group 1 VRC Derby later in the year.

"I think he could be a Derby colt, I really do," Murray said.

"He's a lovely horse and has a lovely temperament."
