The Laurie Laxon trained Gordon Roberts notched up Singapore win number two over the weekend with a brave performance in the Brisbane Racing Club Trophy (2200m) on Chairman’s Trophy night.

Ridden confidently by jockey Joe Moreira, Gordon Roberts (Encosta de Lago x Gordons) settled beautifully two-lengths off the pace for the running, and in a bold race move Moreira stoked up the five-year-old at the 700 metres, taking the lead at the point of the turn.

The early move paid dividends as Gordon Roberts put in a bold performance to hold off the late finishing Golden Lido (Secret Savings) and Iro Otoko (Ustinov) to win by just under half-a-length.

The win was Gordon Roberts’ second in Singapore, with his last five starts seeing him finish no further back than third, with his stakes earnings now just shy of $100,000.

Gordon Roberts is a half-brother to the talented Hong Kong race horse Brave Kid (Elusive City) who ran a good third in the HK-1 Hong Kong Derby, and Hear Me (Van Nistelrooy) who won five races in Singapore.

Singapore’s Champion Trainer Laurie Laxon continues to lead the Singapore Trainer’s Premiership for the 2011 season with 47 wins, his next closest rival Patrick Shaw is currently sitting on 42 wins.

Friday night saw another Pencarrow graduate Martial Art (Tiger Hill x Kwan) put in a good performance for trainer Laurie Laxon, running second after backing up from the Singapore Derby on July 17. Martial Art was a $250,000 purchase by David Ellis of Te Akau Stud from Pencarrow Stud at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2008 Karaka Premier Sale.

The five-year-old’s three career wins have netted almost $250,000 in stakes. A half-brother to Martial Art by Keeper was purchased by Meadowbrook Park from Esker Lodge at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2011 Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale for $50,000.
