Saturday’s feature race meeting at Te Rapa will see the running of the $20,000 Open Handicap www.pencarrowstud.co.nz 2100 with eight horses set to contest the event.

Pencarrow has been supporting the Waikato Racing Club through its sponsorship of this race for over 10 years and Stud Manager Leon Casey will be on hand to represent the stud.

One of the interesting runners in the race is the New Zealand Cup winner My Scotsgray (Golan x My Chameleon), trained by Shaune Richie who has a good team of horses coming through for the spring. He has commented that he is very happy with the way the horse has come back after a lengthy break from the track, and he should enjoy the sharp rise in distance to the 2100 metres. He is to be ridden by Leith Innes.

Another training team with some leading Group 1 horses coming back for the spring is Graeme and Debbie Rogerson. They will be saddling Cent Per Cent (Secret Savings x Minnie Me) who has earned over $500,000 on the track during his career and comes into the event after running second in a hurdles race on 27 July. Jockey Michelle Wenn has taken the mount for the race.

Wearing the number one saddle cloth is the David Smith trained Strapped for Cash (D’Cash x Elfa Leather), an eleven-time winner of over $250,000 in stakes. Now a nine-year-old, he will be ridden by Trudy Thornton and comes into the race three starts into his campaign and should be getting close to peak fitness.

The Peter Darville trained I’m Isaac (Istidaad x Pheroz Gold) comes into the race after being unplaced in the Listed Taumarunui Gold Cup but was successful two starts back over 2000 metres in a rating 90 and gets a two kilogram claim in the race with jockey Maija Vance on board.

Our Star Pupil (Pupil x Stark Vader) from the Jim Pender yard also receives a two kilogram claim with Alysha Collet on board, and New Zealand’s Champion 2010/11 jockey James McDonald has taken the mount on the Donna and Dean Logan trained Jungle Juice (Jungle Pocket x Shadow Ray) who made good ground late after getting back in the Listed Taumarunui Gold Cup at his last start.

The Shaun Clotworthy trained The Jungle Boy (Jungle Pocket x Ballina Wave) who will be ridden by Mark Sweeney and Little Alfie Brown (D’Cash x Clipjoint) with Lynsey Satherley aboard from the Peter Blick yard make up the rest of the field with both coming into the race carrying 54 kilograms.
