Ethereal Honoured on Caulfield Cup Day

Pencarrow Stud’s heroine, the four-time Group 1 winner Ethereal, is being honoured at the Melbourne Racing Club’s premier meeting on Saturday with the new Listed Ethereal Stakes set to be run at Caulfield.
A champion racemare, Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm x Romanee Conti) won some of Australia’s feature Group 1 races with the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, BMW Stakes and Queensland Oaks all to her credit, earning just shy of A$5 million in stakes. Fittingly, the Listed Ethereal Stakes is held on Caulfield Cup day, a race she won in 2001.
A race for fillies over a distance of 2000 metres, the Listed Ethereal Stakes has drawn a field of 14 and will see the likes of the Graeme & Debbie Rogerson trained Dowager Queen (NZ) (Savabeel) take to the track in an effort to win her first Australian black-type. She is the current short-priced favourite at $2.80.
She will have some tough competition in the race with the David Hayes trained Roma Giaconda (Magic Albert) showing plenty on the track in her four starts.
The 1000 Guineas winning combination of Mark Kavanagh and Michael Rodd are running hot with Atlantic Jewel’s stunning win and will have Quench the Thirst (Encosta de Lago) in the listed event.
Also garnering support in the market is the Bart Cummings trained Gliding (Flying Spur) who will be looking to break her maiden in the race, and Grahame Begg’s last start winner Fallen One (Rock Of Gibraltar) who has only made three raceday appearances.
A mare that has made a good start to her career at stud, Ethereal’s first foal Uberalles (Giant's Causeway) was Group 1 placed in the New Zealand Derby.
Ethereal has also impressed in the sale ring, with her third foal by Stravinsky knocked down for $1.3 million at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2007 Karaka Premier Sale.
She is also the dam of Ebullient (Stravinsky) who races in the famous Pencarrow colours and is trained by Steven Ramsay & Julia Ritchie. A horse that has been held back due to injury, he has shown good ability on the track, taking two wins and two placings from five starts.
Pencarrow also race Ebullient’s full-sister Dayess who has taken two placings from her four raceday appearances.
Ethereal’s 2011 foaling has seen her produce a cracking colt by the champion sire Encosta de Lago. She also has a promising two-year-old filly by Encosta de Lago who has been retained by the stud, and is currently receiving her education before joining the Pencarrow Racing Team.
