Pomellato Cruises Home at Taranaki

Racing at Taranaki today saw the Pencarrow Stud owned Pomellato put in a big performance to come from the back to win the $7,000 Bayleys Real Estate Supporting Life Education Trust (1800m).
Trained by Steven Ramsay & Julia Ritchie, Pomellato (Zabeel x Diamond Habit) was ridden brilliantly by jockey Alysha Collett from her wide barrier. Taken straight to the back of the field and two lengths last going past the judge for the first time, the five-year-old settled at the tail of the field for the running.
In a clever ride from Collett, she brought the daughter of Zabeel forward on the rail before finding a gap on the turn and set the mare alight, and the pair strode clear to an easy one-and-a-half-length victory.
The fourth win of her career, Pomellato put in a winning performance on the Taranaki track in October 2010 and relished the step up in distance after being unplaced fresh up at her last start at Rotorua over 1400 metres.
Bred by Sir Patrick & Lady Hogan, Pomellato was purchased by New Zealand Bloodstock as agent for Pencarrow Racing for $220,000. Her 17 career starts to date have netted $20,000 in stakes and she looks to have a bright summer in front of her.
From the Green Desert mare Diamond Habit, Pomellato’s grand-dam is the triple Group 1 winning mare Habibti (Habitat), a half-sister to Eight Carat, the dam of Octagonal, Marquise, Diamond Lover, Kaapstad and many other top performers.
Pencarrow Stud also own the Zabeel mare Lafleur who shares the same grand-dam as Pomellato in Habibti. Pencarrow Racing raced a daughter of Lafleur called Amaryllis (Red Ransom) who won the Group 3 Darley Plate, and they will offer her half-brother by O’Reilly at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2012 Karaka Premier Sale at Lot 279.
