Trainer Bruce Wallace has continued Pencarrow Racing’s winning streak on the Trentham track with Viva Roma claiming Saturday’s $30,000 GIB Premier (1200m) with James McDonald in the saddle.

In a tough performance, Viva Roma (Spartacus x Verganti) was three wide with cover for the trip but was not void of trouble after being forced very wide on the turn. In a fighting victory, the four-year-old made her way down the outside of the field with a sustained turn-of-foot and got to race leader Shandream just shy of the post to win by half-a-head.

A mare that is lightly raced, she has only had 12 starts and was unlucky in her two starts leading into the race, being caught well back in the Listed Newmarket Handicap and getting blocked for a run at a crucial stage in the Listed Counties Bowl.

Bred by Peter and Philip Vela, Viva Roma’s record now stands at 12 starts for three wins, four placings and over $40,000 in stakes.

From a Strategic mare, Viva Roma is from the same family as the Group 1 winning sprinter Miss Raggedy Ann and the Group 1 1000 Guineas winner Buzz Lightyear.

Racing at Singapore on Friday night saw Pencarrow Racing notch up another winner with Quinta de Lago (Encosta de Lago x Slip Sliding) taking his sixth career victory for trainer Laurie Laxon.

The six-year-old son of Encosta de Lago ran a close second two starts back over the mile and was too good on Friday night with jockey Joao Moreira in the saddle.

A top class yearling, Quinta de Lago was purchased for Pencarrow by David Ellis from Curraghmore Stud for $725,000 at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2007 Karaka Premier Sale. He has now won six of his 38 starts, and placed in a further nine.
