First Foal for Pencarrow

Pencarrow Stud is due to welcome a number of well-bred foals this season from their leading broodmare band and the first foal arrived earlier this week with a colt from the mare Terroir.

A Danehill mare, Terroir produced a colt by Irish star Rip Van Winkle, the World Champion 3YO turf miler in 2009 and Equal Highest Rated Turf Intermediate Performer in 2010 along with kiwi champion So You Think.

“He is a really nice colt,” commented Pencarrow Stud Manager Leon Casey. “He is a strong foal with good muscle and is a quality type bred on the same cross as Frankel.”

Pencarrow welcomed the second foal of the season this afternoon with the blue-blooded mare Amaryllis (Red Ransom) producing her first foal, a filly by top sire Encosta de Lago.

“Amaryllis was a top mare winning the Group 3 Darley Plate during her racing career and has done a great job with her first foal,” said Leon.

Amaryllis’s dam Lafleur (Zabeel), winner of the Group 2 Royal Stakes, is in foal to O’Reilly.

With around 65 mares in foal, it will be a busy season for Peter and Philip Vela’s Pencarrow Stud with many high profile mares due to foal down in the next couple of months.

“We have a lot to look forward to this season with Darci Brahma and Burgundy’s dam Grand Echezeaux in foal to O’Reilly and her sister Our Echezeaux, dam of the smart filly Pure Elegance, in foal to Makfi,” commented Leon.

“We also have mares in foal to Commands, Darci Brahma, Encosta de Lago, Fastnet Rock, High Chaparral, Lonhro, Mastercraftsman, Road to Rock, Savabeel, Shocking and Zabeel to name a few.
