Excitement in the Pencarrow Racing ranks went up another notch today with Elysium (O’Reilly x Velvet And Satin) producing a debut performance to suggest that she has a bright spring in front of her.

Making her race debut at Te Teko, Elysium made light work of her rivals despite the testing wet track, winning the $7,000 Maiden 3YO (1200m) by two-and-a-quarter lengths under jockey Michael Coleman.

The three-year-old came into the race after three trials, the last of which she won at Te Teko earlier this month, and trainer Lance Noble was impressed with her debut performance.

“She is a nice filly and she won well today,” said Noble. “She trialled really well at Te Teko so to see her come out and perform like that is a good result.

“It was a heavy track today and she handled it well but I think she will enjoy better ground. All her trials have been on wet footing but she has a nice low action so we will have to see.

“I will have to sit down with Peter and discuss plans but getting her some black-type would be great. The New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Series has some nice races so we could have a look at those.

“It is a nice position to be in when you have a filly of her ability coming into the spring.”

Bred by Peter and Philip Vela, Elysium is from the stakes placed Carnegie mare Velvet And Satin, a daughter of Romanee Conti (Sir Tristram) and half-sister to Melbourne Cup winner Ethereal (Rhythm). She is also a half-sister the stakes-winning two-year-old Bespoke (Pins).

Velvet And Satin produced a colt by Mastercraftsman last season and was served by Pins.

Pencarrow Racing may have multiple runners in New Zealand Bloodstock’s Filly of the Year Series with Pure Elegance (Redoute’s Choice) being aimed at the first race of the Series, the Group 3 Gold Trail Stakes (1200m) in Hawke’s Bay on 22 September.

The Steven Ramsay & Julia Ritchie trained filly won her only start as a two-year-old by over five lengths in an effortless performance and is back in work in preparation for the spring. She is set to trial at Paeroa tomorrow (28 August).
