The promising Lucky Unicorn mare Adalia (ex Ajfan) brought up the fourth win of the season for Pencarrow Racing yesterday with a convincing victory at Taranaki in a $12,000 Fillies & Mares 1800 metre contest.

Trained by Jason Bridgman, Adalia broke well from the barriers and settled just off the speed for jockey Cameron Lammas. With the pace dropping away at the 800 metre mark, Lammas brought Adalia into the race, taking her to the lead 500 metres from home. She comfortably held off the opposition in the straight to claim her second race win by one-and-a-quarter lengths at just her third start.

Adalia’s winning performance yesterday was in contrast to her victory in Taupo in late August where she came from well back in the field, producing a good turn-of-foot in the straight to deny her rivals. Yesterday’s effort saw the four-year-old lead the field into the straight and sustain a solid gallop to take victory, showing that she has the ability to win races from both on and off the speed.

Bred by Peter and Philip Vela, Adalia is from the Group 1 placed Woodman mare Ajfan and is a half-sister to dual Sgp-2 winner and Singapore’s Champion 3YO Sprinter (2008) and Champion Older Stayer (2009 & 2010) Big Maverick (O’Reilly).

She is also a half-sister to stakes placed El Laoob (Red Ransom), dam of American Group 3 winner Pachattack (Pulpit) and American stakes winner La Mina (Mineshaft).

Ajfan’s yearling colt by Darci Brahma was purchased by Laurie Laxon from Pencarrow Stud for $70,000 at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2012 Karaka Premier Sale. She produced a colt by Darci Brahma in 2011 and was served by Darci Brahma last season.
