Siciliani Breaks Maiden Ranks

Pencarrow celebrated a successful Friday last week on both sides of the Tasman with Siciliani breaking maiden ranks at Tauranga and King Manu winning his second race in Australia.

Bred and raced by Pencarrow Stud, Siciliani (Darci Brahma x Santagostino, by Giant's Causeway) claimed her first race victory at just her third race day start on Friday for trainers Steven Ramsay & Julia Ritchie.

Siciliani was ridden by Vinnie Colgan in the $7,000 F&M 1600 metre maiden and was stride for stride with rival Gardez La Foi (Keeper) for much of the straight before edging away in the final 50 metres to win by a short neck.

The three-year-old filly made her debut at Makaraka in September where she ran a good fourth behind Touch Win (Excellent Art) before racing unplaced at Te Rapa at her last start.

Siciliani is from the Group 2 winning mare Santagostino, a half-sister to New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year and Group 1 NZ Oaks winner Vapour Trail (Jet Ball) and stakes winner Encosta Diablo (Encosta de Lago).

Santagostino produced a sister to Siciliani in 2010 and was served by Lonhro last season.

In Australia the Pencarrow bred King Manu (Darci Brahma x Silver and Roses, by Sadler's Wells) took his second win at Stawell in a A$15,000 2000 metre race.

The four-year-old son of Darci Brahma has been racing in good form in his last six starts, notching up four placings and two victories.

King Manu was offered by Pencarrow Stud at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2010 Karaka Premier Sale and was purchased by Edwards/Elkington Racing for $100,000.

A well-bred son of Darci Brahma, King Manu’s blue-blooded dam Silver and Roses is by the champion sire Sadler’s Wells and is an unraced daughter of the prolific producer Blush With Pride (Blushing Groom).

Winner of the Group 1 Kentucky Oaks and Group 1 Santa Anita Santa Susana Stakes, Blush With Pride is the dam or grand-dam of top performers including four time Group 1 winner Rags to Riches (A.P. Indy), dual Group 1 winner Jazil (Seeking the Gold), Europe’s 2007 Champion Filly and four time Group 1 winner Peeping Fawn (Danehill) and Group 1 winner and sire Thewayyouare (Kingmambo).

Silver and Roses produced a brother to King Manu in 2009, named Military Attache, who will race in Singapore.
