After a luckless weekend for Pencarrow Racing which saw stable star Guiseppina scratched from the Group 1 Westbury Stud Captain Cook Stakes due to slow track conditions, Tsar Reformer made amends when he cleared out to win well at Waipukurau on Sunday.

After drawing barrier 1 and enjoying the perfect run in transit, Tsar Reformer (Darci Brahma x Grace and Power) was produced at the top of the straight by Jockey Sam Collett to win going away from the field by three lengths.

After only three starts before yesterday’s victory, the four-year-old son of Darci Brahma showed a win wasn’t far away, running second at his last start before a break over the winter months to strengthen.

“We will just look to work him through the grades now all going well,” reported co-trainer Julia Richie.

Earlier in the day Bon Genie (Cape Cross) found the line well from back in the field and indicated that she will relish a step up in trip in her coming starts.

“She’s a big striding mare and took a while to get going, but we were very happy with her run and she will probably step up to 2000m now,” commented Julia.

The Group 2 Cal Izuzu Stakes (1600m) has been earmarked as the next possible mission for Guiseppina (Johar) this coming Saturday.

“We will look at the Fillies and Mares this coming weekend at Te Rapa for her, its weight for age and should suit her well,” said Ritchie. “We are also aiming Dolmabache at the Waikato Gold Cup and everything has gone well with her since Counties.”

Bred and raced by Peter and Philip Vela, Tsar Reformer is out of the imported Brief Truce mare Grace and Power who is from the family of Horse of the Year Might and Power and sire Lucky Owners.

She is already the dam of stakes placed El Bulli (Zabeel) and Abbey Drive (Zabeel) and has a two-year-old filly by Alamosa that will be retained by Pencarrow.
