Esquina Another Winner for Darci Brahma

The Pencarrow raced Esquina returned to the form which saw her break maiden ranks on debut and became Darci Brahma’s fourth winner in 24 hours with a smart win at Ashburton today in the $7,000 Barneswood Farm Rating 65 (1600m).

Trained by Jan Hay, Esquina (Darci Brahma x Encens, by Common Grounds) won her debut on the same track in October last year and had another five starts leading into today’s race where she placed at her second start and again at her last race at Riccarton over 2000 metres.

The daughter of Darci Brahma has been racing well but has not had all luck since breaking maiden ranks in October. Despite this the filly has always finished her races off strongly and was rewarded for her consistency today under Kylie Williams as she raced away to a dominant four length win.

“She was a certainty beaten at her last start, she never saw daylight,” said trainer Jan Hay.

“Today we were determined not to get into a bad spot so we planned to sit one out and one back and she ended up flying out of the gates and led which was not the plan but she won very well.

“Today was a test to see if she likes the cut in the ground and it appears she does. I don’t have any plans in mind for her at present but I think she has a few more wins in her.”

The four-year-old completes a hot run for her Pencarrow bred sire Darci Brahma who has celebrated four race winners in the last 24 hours, the others being Darciwood who won in Australia, High Rolling and Da Best Coup who also won at today’s Ashburton meeting.

Esquina was bred by Peter and Philip Vela and is a half-sister to the stakes placed Epopee, dam of the French Group 2 winner Testosterone. Her dam is the English bred Encens who is a half-sister to the Champion Sire Scenic, Group 3 winner Silent Warrior and stakes winner Cupid.
