Burgundy to Stand at Cambridge Stud

Pencarrow Stud has produced yet another exciting stallion prospect with the announcement that the Pencarrow bred blue-blood Burgundy (Redoute’s Choice) has been retired to stud and will stand at Sir Patrick Hogan’s Cambridge Stud alongside the champion sire Zabeel.

A son of the champion sire Redoute’s Choice, Burgundy is a three-quarter brother to the five-time Group 1 winner and Group 1 producing sire Darci Brahma, and is from the Group 1 winning Zabeel mare Grand Echezeaux.

Purchased as a yearling by David Ellis from Pencarrow Stud at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2010 Premier Sale for $1.3 million, Burgundy has proven himself a top racehorse during his time on the track.

The winner of seven of his 12 starts, Burgundy was a Listed and Group 3 winning three-year-old who raced on at four to record two further stakes victories and a placing in the Group 1 Telegraph Handicap.

“Burgundy is the epitome of what a thoroughbred should be – a magnificent physique, a truly brilliant pedigree and an incredible temperament,” commented Ellis.

“I have never been so delighted at securing a yearling as I was when I purchased Burgundy. My close friends know that I adored that colt from the minute I saw him as a foal. To me he was the horse of the sale and I syndicated him within 24 hours.”

Cambridge Stud’s stallion roster, headed by Zabeel, also includes Group 1 producing sire Keeper and multiple Group 1 winners Cape Blanco, Tavistock, and Power, who is also new to the stud this season.

Hogan believes that Burgundy can continue the stud’s success and is hugely impressed with his blue-blooded pedigree.

“Cambridge Stud stood champion Sir Tristram and still stands his most successful son, Zabeel,” said Hogan.

“I’ve found the right horse to continue that winning formula with Burgundy through a Group One winning champion daughter of Zabeel.”

“What a pedigree – when I look at every horse in Burgundy’s eight generations I find that each and every one has made a significant contribution at the highest level. Indeed, his is a remarkable pedigree page with Redoute’s Choice, Danehill, Grand Echezeaux, Zabeel and Darci Brahma all Group 1 winners and producers and as well the four-time Group One winning Ethereal.”

Burgundy’s three-quarter brother, the Pencarrow bred and sold Darci Brahma, has made a great start to his stud career which is encouraging for breeders looking to support the son of Redoute’s Choice at his first season at stud.

With Darci Brahma’s oldest progeny currently four-year-olds, he has sired 10 stakes winners, including the unbeaten Group 1 winning two-year-old Recite, (Miss) Artistic and Nashville – all Group 1 winners – plus Singapore’s Champion Three-Year-Old Super Easy and Group winners Darci Be Good, Malandrino and the Pencarrow’s own Group 2 winner Valbuena.

Burgundy will stand his first season at a fee of $7,000 + GST (LFG). For more information contact Cambridge Stud or click here.
