The Pencarrow raced Allez Rose cruised to an easy six length victory yesterday in the $7,000 New Holland Maiden over 2100 metres at Awapuni.

It was an overdue success for the Lisa Latta trained Allez Rose as she has weighed in at all bar one of her previous seven career starts, including being the bridesmaid four times.

Ridden like the best horse in the race by globetrotting jockey James McDonald she travelled wide throughout on a very testing heavy11 track. McDonald kept her out of trouble and hit the front early in the final straight. As she drew clear of the field she showed her inexperience racing greenly but McDonald took a long peep over his shoulder and realised Allez Rose had the race at her mercy.

“She won well and she handles those sorts of tracks,” commented Latta. “She did run around and raced a little bit greenly but she is still probably a preparation away.”

Latta was pleased that Allez Rose was able to cap off her consistent form with a win at her first try over a middle distance.

“It was her first run over ground and she did what she was expected to do.

“I was going to turn her out but James said maybe give her one more start this preparation,” said Latta.

Bred by Peter and Philip Vela, Allez Rose is out of Allez Noir and is from the family of Group 1 Epsom Handicap winner Allez Suez (Canny Lad), whose dam Coutet (Nuage d’Or) was also a black-type winner of the Group 3 Invercargill Gold Cup and features prominently in the pedigree of Allez Rose.

She is from the first crop of American Group 2 winner Chinese Dragon (Stravinsky) and becomes his fourth winner. From limited opportunities Chinese Dragon has also produced the Listed New Zealand St Leger winner Serpent.

Allez Noir has an unnamed two-year-old by Shinko King.
