International Double for Pencarrow Stud

In addition to three winners in New Zealand within 24 hours, Pencarrow Stud also tasted international success this week with graduates of the Stud recording victories in Australia and Hong Kong.

On Wednesday in Hong Kong Classic Jewellery (NZ) (O’Reilly X Paolino) succeeded at Happy Valley while the next day Micken (NZ) (Darci Brahma x Battochi) scored at the Gold Coast in Australia.

Formerly trained in New Zealand by Kevin Myers, Micken dashed to a resounding 5.3 length win in a fresh state over 1400m for Gold Coast based trainer Bryan Guy. It was the fourth win in the five-year-old’s career that has earned his owners, Mr M A Hill, Mr K R Hill, Miss T J Hill, Mrs A M Hill & Mrs S Hill, A$95,251 in prizemoney.

As a three-year-old Micken was Group 2 placed when finishing second in the Wellington Guineas. The well-travelled gelding also campaigned in Melbourne last season resulting in three minor placings.

Kilgravin Lodge offered Micken for sale on behalf of Pencarrow Stud at the 2010 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale where Kevin Myers purchased the horse for $25,000. Pencarrow Stud has a full-brother to Micken catalogued as Lot 376 at the upcoming Karaka Premier Sale.

Micken is out of Pencarrow Stud’s mare Battochi (Success Express), the dam of Group 1 winner Guiseppina (Johar) who raced to victory carrying the Pencarrow colours in the Group 1 Telegraph Handicap.

In Hong Kong on Wednesday night another Pencarrow Stud-bred horse, Classic Jewellery, landed the third victory of the five-year-old’s career. Trained by John Size, the son of O’Reilly overcame a wide barrier to find a close position behind the leaders with cover. Expertly ridden by Joao Moreira, Classic Jewellery won by three-quarters-of-a-length to give the rider his fourth winner on the eight-race card.

Purchased by the Hong Kong Jockey Club at the 2010 Karaka Premier Sale for $230,000, Classic Jewellery has now earned his owner, Tung Moon Fai, HK$2,601,750 in prizemoney.

Classic Jewellery is a son of stakes winning mare Paolino (Housebuster), the winner of the Group 2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes wearing the Pencarrow Racing silks.

Paolino is the dam of five winners including the Listed two-year-old winner Mirandola (O’Reilly). She is also a half-sister to Filly of the Year Sarwatch being out of four-time Group 1 winner Riverina Charm (Sir Tristram).

Paolino foaled a yearling filly by Pins and was covered by first season sire Reliable Man this breeding season.

Pencarrow Stud enjoyed five winners that were either bred and/or raced by Peter Vela within 24 starting with Duquesa (Encosta de Lago) winning at Ellerslie before a double was recorded at Hastings through Biddable (Exceed and Excel) and Dark and Stormy (Zabeel).
