Pencarrow Racing’s South Island runners enjoyed a good at Ashburton on Saturday with Southern Pride (Reset x Millar’s Pride) breaking maidens in the $10,000 Lindauer Maiden 1600m.

A race-to-race double was then achieved by Pencarrow Racing with Revolutionary (Darci Brahma x Iconic) winning the very next race on the card to go with the victory of Silver Eclipse (Darci Brahma x Zino Belle) at Trentham.

Southern Pride entered yesterday’s race having finished third on the same track only 5 days earlier for trainer Jan Hay.

Jockey Kylie Williams used the draw of barrier 1 to her advantage as she kicked up along the rails to sit third in the trail. After enjoying an economical run Southern Pride got a saloon passage along the inside and dashed away from the field, winning by 2.2 lengths as she was eased up near the line.

“I was really happy with her and it was a beautiful ride from Kylie,” commented Hay. “She gave her every opportunity and we were thrilled with the win.

“She has not been easy, she has been late scratched at the barrier and her stable name is madam because she is a madam by nature.

“She has been consistently going good races, she has just taken a while to learn about all the little things that happen in a race.

“She would prefer the cut in the track but we have a drought down here, they have been watering and watering the track but you can’t beat these winds.”

Yesterday’s maiden victory came at start number six for the four-year-old mare for owner Sir Peter Vela. She was bred by Sir Peter Vela along with Philip Vela.

Southern Pride is out of the imported Japanese mare Millar’s Pride (Lammtarra), a daughter of Group 1 runner-up Canadian Mill (Mill Reef) and half-sister to Group 2 winner Hawajiss (Kris). Southern Pride is by unbeaten racehorse Reset who stands at Darley Australia.

Pencarrow Stud has 24 yearlings in New Zealand Bloodstock’s Karaka Premier Sale this week with selling commencing tomorrow. Pencarrow’s first yearling through the ring will be Lot 35, a colt by O’Reilly out of Grand Echezeaux, a half-brother to Darci Brahma.
