Consistent Pencarrow Racing mare Vendemiaire (Perfectly Ready x Vingtaine) broke through for a deserved maiden victory, racing to a four-length win in the $7,000 Placemakers Hawera Raceday Maiden 2100m at Hawera yesterday.

The daughter of Perfectly Ready had been placed five times heading into yesterday’s event including a third placing at her last start behind Group 1 Randwick Guineas hopeful High Tec (High Chaparral) for trainers Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie.

Matthew Cameron was originally booked to ride the five-year-old mare but was stood down from riding for the day allowing Samantha Collet to take the reins. Collet let the mare slide to the lead early over the staying journey and set an even tempo.

Vendemiaire applied plenty pressure coming around the final corner on a Good 3 track and was travelling the best of all upon straightening. The mare kicked away in the straight and was dominant in claiming victory by four-lengths.

“She was pretty impressive,” stated Ramsay. “She jumped well and ended up leading, once she got balanced up she showed a good turn of foot and kicked away quite nicely.

“I was quite happy with the win. She has taken a while to come to it but that was the best she has ever let go. She has won by five-lengths and done it easy.

“She pulled up good and has eaten up so we will just tick her over and find another staying race for.”

The first win of Vendemiaire’s career came at start number 13 for her owner Sir Peter Vela. Pencarrow Stud purchased the Vendemiaire for $85,000 from Haunui Farm at the 2010 Karaka Select Sale.

Bred by Richard Moore, Vendemiaire is out of Vingtaine (Centaine) and is a half-sister to Group 1 Levin Classic winner Eileen Dubh (Storm Creek). Vingtaine is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Culminate (Elnadim) and is a granddaughter of the great broodmare Soliloquy (Sobig).

Pencarrow Racing had three runners at Hawera yesterday with Hoofsain Bolt (Casino Prince x Huluava) also triumphant and Queen of Excuses (No Excuse Needed x Kailey Princess) finishing a close third on the day.
