Two Pencarrow Stud bred and sold gallopers were successful in Australia yesterday with Correggio (Excellent Art x Magical Moment) and Darci Magic (Darci Brahma x Shopping Spree) both victorious in different states in Australia.

In Victoria, Correggio regained winning form with a come from behind victory at Sandown’s Sportingbet Park for trainer Murray Johnson.

The son of Excellent Art was unplaced at his last run but finished a strong second at Flemington two starts ago in January. Leading rider Chad Schofield was aboard for the first time and produced the four-year-old gelding widest on the Slow 6 track and was able to surge to the line late to win by a head.

“It was very pleasing for him to put it all together and get the win,” commented Johnson. “I thought he was over the odds, I don’t think he ever gets a lot of respect.

“He should have won two starts ago, he lost a shoe in that race, and he needed the run last time, I thought that was obvious. 1600m on a wet track at Sandown is like 1800m on a regular track and that is about his best distance so I thought he was a great chance.

“We will continue to work through the grades, he seems to run his best at Flemington and Sandown. It is nice to run at Flemington but they just don’t run races there very often.”

Correggio has won four races from 17 starts in Victoria now and has accumulated $97,435 in prizemoney for his owners Mr M A Ramsden, Mr N J Kenyon, Mr C J Deighton, Mr J C H Clark & Mr S R Bickford.

Bred by Sir Peter and Philip Vela, Correggio is out of imported mare Magical Moment (Sadler’s Wells) who is also the dam of Group 2 Rich Hill Mile winner Fears Nothing (Faltaat) and from the family of Group 1 winners Zambezi Sun (Dansili) and Continent (Lake Coniston).

Magical Moment was covered last season by Australia’s Champion Sire of last season Exceed and Excel.

Tom Magnier/BBA Ireland purchased Correggio at the 2011 Karaka Select Sale for $250,000 from Pencarrow Stud.

At New South Wales’ metropolitan meeting, run at Warwick Farm, Darci Magic made it back-to-back victories following his last start win at Kembla Grange for trainer Bede Murray.

The son of Darci Brahma was impressive in victory yesterday, racing away from the field to win by three-lengths. Rider Christian Reith had Darci Magic travelling mid-field on the rail but was travelling so well coming around the corner he pulled his mount to the outside to challenge at the top of the straight.

Darci Magic shot away from the field and quickly put the race beyond doubt, easing down to win by three-lengths on a Slow 6 track.

“I expected him to win,” commented Murray. “I think he is a very good horse. He has got a lot of learning to do yet, he needs to concentrate more.

“He didn’t handle the going, he got through it but he wasn’t at home in it.

“He will now go onto the Gunsynd Classic (Group 3) at Eagle Farm in a fortnight then hopefully on a Queensland Derby path.”

Yesterday’s win was the third from seven starts for the three-year-old gelding who has earned $54,435 in prizemoney for his owners Mr J Wilson, Mrs W M Wilson, Mrs P M Thomson, Mr G D Thomson, Mr D R Ind, Mr R J Chilcott, Mr J W Greig, Mr I M Neville O A M & Dr J C Ford.

Bred by Sir Peter and Philip Vela, Darci Magic is also out of an imported Sadler’s Wells mare Shopping Spree, the dam of stakes placegetter Kudamm (Cape Cross) and is from the family of international Group 1 winners Zoman (Affirmed) and Love and Affection (Exclusive Era). Shopping Spree was served by Australian-based sire Wanted last season.

Bede Murray purchased Darci Magic for $130,000 at the 2012 Karaka Premier Sale for $130,000 from Pencarrow Stud.
