Pencarrow Racing mare North of Sunset (Red Ransom x Zygadene) earned a deserved victory in the Rating 75 $8,000 Team Walleans 2100m at Te Teko yesterday, capping a consistent run of form.

The daughter of Red Ransom had been placed in four runs since her last win on New Year’s Eve for trainers Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie including finishing second to stablemate Adolay (Fast ‘n’ Famous) last start.

Ridden by Danielle Johnson, North of Sunset went straight to the lead over the staying trip and stayed there throughout the race. Challenges were mounted in the home straight by Fastnfree (Shinko King) and I’ve Got Faith (Keep the Faith) but North of Sunset ran strongly to the line to win by 1.3 lengths.

“She was well-placed and she got the job done,” commented Ramsay. “She got taken on a couple of times in the running by Fastnfree but she kicked on well in the straight and even put a couple of lengths on them.

“She is an honest horse and puts in every time. She has won two races this time in and has run a couple of seconds so she has been genuine.

“We will look to run her in two weeks at Awapuni and if she goes well there we might look at the Rotorua Cup with her to try and get some black-type.”

Yesterday’s victory was the third in the career of the four-year-old mare from 15 starts, earning $35,825 for owner Sir Peter Vela.

Bred by Sir Peter and Philip Vela, North of Sunset is a three-quarter-sister to dual Group 2 Amaryllis (Red Ransom) being out of Zabeel mare Zygadene, a full-sister to dual Group 2 winner and Group 1 placegetter Lafleur (Zabeel), the dam of Amaryllis and Listed winner Papilio (Redoute’s Choice).

Earlier in the day fellow Pencarrow Racing runner Persuasive (Darci Brahma x Pertinacious) finished on well from the back of the field to run third for trainers Lance O’Sullivan & Andrew Scott.
