The ever-consistent Pencarrow-bred Bogart (Darci Brahma x Pavan) captured the third win of his short career in Singapore on Friday night, claiming victory comfortably in a S$60,000 Class 4 1400m event at Kranji.

Bogart was sent out a well-backed race-favourite for trainer Michael Freedman following an impeccable start to his career having never finished further back than fourth in his eight previous outings.

The pace was strong early in the race as four horses vied for the lead. Leading rider Manoel Nunes positioned Bogart behind the strong pace, ready to pounce in the home straight. The son of Darci Brahma ranged up to the leaders at the 300m mark effortlessly and dashed to the front. Fellow New Zealand-bred horse Turangawaewae (Postponed) fought gamely but Bogart asserted his strength to win by a length.

The win was a welcome tonic for trainer Michael Freedman who has recently undergone surgery on a damaged shoulder and was unable to be in attendance on Friday night.

“This horse has been pretty consistent, he’s never been out of the first four,” commented Freedman’s assistant trainer James Peters.

“We gave him a break to get him over some minor niggles and he’s come back really good. I think he’s a horse who likes to be kept fresh.

“He had a lovely run just behind the leaders and the fast pace suited him. It really played into his hands.”

Bogart has won three races from his nine starts, earning S$146,126 for his owners the Mummify Stable.

Bred by Sir Peter and Philip Vela, Bogart is out of Group 1 New Zealand Oaks and Group 1 Australasian Oaks runner-up Pavan (Centaine), a daughter of Group 1 South Australian Oaks winner Marmalitre (Wolverton). Bogart is a half-brother to Listed placegetter Let Loushe (Black Minnaloushe) and Almaviva (Catbird), the dam of Group 3 placegetter Atacama (Pentire).

Pavan was covered by Bogart’s sire Darci Brahma, a five-time Group 1 winner and twice Leading Sire in Singapore.

Michael Freedman/Michael Wallace Bloodstock purchased Bogart for $155,000 at the 2012 Karaka Premier Sale from Pencarrow Stud.
