South Island mare Southern Pride (Reset x Miller’s Pride) collected the second win of her career for Pencarrow Racing with victory in the Rating 65 $7,000 Central SI Owners Assn 1400m at Ashburton today.

Trained on the track by Jan Hay, the daughter of Reset won her maiden race on her home track four starts ago and has been placed in two of her three runs since.

Rider Daniel Bothamley found a great position early in the race, sitting behind the two leaders and one horse off the rail. Entering the straight, the four-year-old mare was travelling sweetly and raced to the front, cruising to the line for an effortless half-a-length victory.

“We were pretty happy with her and she has been consistent right through,” commented Hay. “She tries really, really hard which is a blessing.

“Daniel said she knocked off when she got clear but she was good. She is probably not really suited to that distance, she is more of a miler or 2000m horse but she hadn’t raced for a while and we also wanted to try her on a wet track to see if she handled it.

“We will probably give her another race and then give her a little break after that. She is only a small mare but she thinks she is 17 hands and bullet proof.”

The second win of Southern Pride’s career comes at her tenth start for owner Sir Peter Vela.

Bred by Sir Peter & Philip Vela, Southern Pride is out of imported Japanese mare Miller’s Pride (Lammtarra), a half-sister to Group 2 winner and Group 1 runner-up in England & Ireland Hawajiss (Kris).

Southern Pride is by unbeaten Group 1 winning racehorse Reset who stands at Darley in Australia.
