Pencarrow Racing tasted success in Australia yesterday with Devil’s Harmony (Pentire x Devil’s Song) an impressive winner on debut at Sandown for trainer David Hayes.

Trained at Lindsay Park Euroa in north-east Victoria, the two-year-old filly entered the A$35,000 Taralye Plate 1200m with no official barrier trials, but with the stable holding a high opinion of the youngster.

Kiwi rider Michael Walker was entrusted with the mount and found a good position mid-field from barrier seven. Walker produced the daughter of Pentire in the centre of the track and the filly strolled up to the leaders at the 150m mark then drew away, showing a strong turn of foot to win comfortably by 2.3 lengths.

“She is a very impressive filly, very good looking,” commented Hayes. “I think she will be better suited at a mile so it was a good bonus to win at that distance. She showed a great turn of foot to win so we hope she can keep stepping up.

“I like the way she did it, sitting two or three lengths off the pace then picked them up and wanted to win.

“We thought she would run well but thought she would get beaten running on. I love it when they race better than they work, even though her track work had been good, to win two-year-old races in Melbourne you have got to be pretty precocious.

“We are considering going to Brisbane for a stakes race if she pulls up well. She will be better next season though, she is a real three-year-old type.”

Raced by Sir Peter Vela who bred the filly with Philip Vela, Devil’s Harmony is out of the unraced mare Devil’s Song (Stravinsky) who is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Vapour Trail (Jetball), Group 2 winner Santagostino (Giant’s Causeway) and Listed winner Encosta Diablo (Encosta de Lago).

Devil’s Harmony is closely related to Pencarrow’s other winner yesterday Deliciano (Darci Brahma) - out of Santagostino – who claimed the fifth win of her career.

Devil’s Song was served by Pentire last season with the resulting foal to be a full-sibling to Devil’s Harmony.
