Four-year-old Pencarrow mare Elysium (O’Reilly x Velvet and Satin) posted the third victory of her career at Ruakaka yesterday, triumphant in the $8,000 Rating 75 Lion Red 1200m.

Her win completed a race-to-race double for Pencarrow Racing with Secret Lily (Sakhee’s Secret x Desert Lily) successful on debut one race earlier.

Elysium was unplaced at her last start when unsuited by a Heavy track at Hastings, but had run two good minor placings at her previous two starts before that for Pencarrow’s resident trainers Steven Ramsay & Julia Ritchie.

Blinkers were added to the mare for yesterday’s race and appeared to work the oracle.

“It was a pretty good performance,” commented Ramsay. “It was her first start in blinkers, she drew one and Sam Collet gave her a good ride. It was probably a Saturday field yesterday, I think a few horses went up there for the good track.”

Regular rider Samantha Collet was once again aboard the daughter of O’Reilly and gave her an economical run, sitting behind the leader on the rails. When produced in the straight, Elysium dashed to the front and fought off the late challenges of Clubs Choice (Coats Choice) and Oh My Gosh (Ruby’s Jester).

“She disappointed us last start at Hastings but we put that down to the track. We just freshened her up, put the blinkers on and got a good track. Sam said she has quite a good action so she probably likes the better tracks.

“She will go back to Ruakaka on 28 June, there is another Rating 75 1200m for her there. At this stage we will stick to the sprint distances, she actually travelled a bit keenly in the trail when there was good speed on so will give her another 1200m start.”

Yesterday’s victory was Elysium’s third win from 14 starts for owner Sir Peter Vela.

Bred by Sir Peter & Philip Vela, Elysium is out of stakes placed mare Velvet and Satin, a daughter of Group 3 Hong Kong International Cup winner Romanee Conti (Sir Tristram) and a half-sister to Group 1 Melbourne Cup heroine Ethereal (Rhythm).

Velvet and Satin has only had two foals to race, the other being Listed two-year-old winner Bespoke (Pins). Velvet and Satin was served by leading sire Darci Brahma last year.

Pencarrow also came close to victory in the United Kingdom on Tuesday with Mary McPhee (Makfi x Aunty Mary) finishing runner-up at her second start for trainer Charlie Hills and owners Sir Peter Vela, Qatar Racing and J Gompertz.
