UK Winner for Pencarrow

Pencarrow Racing had a winner in the United Kingdom over the weekend with Mary McPhee (Makfi x Aunty Mary) saluting in a maiden two-year-old race over six furlongs in Warwick.

Featuring in the ownership is Sir Peter Vela & J Gompertz along with Qatar Bloodstock, who bred the filly by their first season sire Makfi. The Charles Hills trained filly was having her third start and was coming off a second placing at Warwick in May.

Mary McPhee started second-favourite behind odds-on shot Pastoral Girl (Pastoral Pursuits) and the pair drew away from the 14-horse field to fight out the finish. Mary McPhee was able to gain the upper hand to land victory by half-a-length for rider Harry Bentley.

“Mary McPhee was second here at a time when our horses were not in the best of form,” commented Hills. “She could do with 7f and the Star Stakes at Sandown is a likely objective.”

The two-year-old filly’s dam Aunty Mary (Common Grounds) was also a winner at two and is a half-sister to Champion 2YO Filly in Europe Attraction (Efisio), a five-time Group 1 winner. Aunty Mary is the dam of six winners including Mary’s Daughter (Royal Applause), a stakes placegetter as a two-year-old.

Makfi’s oldest Northern Hemisphere progeny are two-year-olds and his oldest Southern Hemisphere crop is due to turn two at the start of next month. The dual Group 1 winning sire shuttles to Westbury Stud in New Zealand from Tweenhills Farm & Stud in England.
